Travel Documents and Essentials
First and foremost, it’s crucial to ensure you have all the necessary travel documents and essentials before your St Lucia vacation:
1.1. Passport and Visa: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date. Visitors from many countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, do not require a visa for short stays in Saint Lucia. However, check the specific entry requirements for your nationality.
1.2. Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost or stolen belongings.
1.3. Printed Copies: Carry printed copies of your passport, travel insurance policy, flight itineraries, hotel reservations, and any other important documents. Additionally, store digital copies securely in a cloud-based service.
1.4. Vaccination Records: Check if any vaccinations or health precautions are required or recommended for travelers to Saint Lucia. Carry your vaccination records and necessary medications.
1.5. Currency: Saint Lucia uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), but the U.S. dollar is widely accepted. Bring some cash for small expenses, and consider carrying a credit or debit card for larger purchases.
Not all bank ATM’s take foreign cards to dispense cash. Bank of Saint Lucia will not give cash to UK accounts. First Caribbean is the best option. There is no “cash back” option for debit cards too (I have been amused many times being behind a tourist making this request!). Contactless payment has only been recently introduced and may only work for local bank accounts.
1.6. Travel Adapters and Chargers: Saint Lucia uses Type G electrical outlets, so make sure to bring the appropriate adapters and chargers for your electronic devices.
Clothing and Footwear
Saint Lucia’s climate is tropical, with warm temperatures year-round, so packing light, breathable clothing is essential:
2.1. Swimwear: Bring swimsuits, cover-ups, and flip-flops for enjoying the beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters.
2.2. Lightweight Clothing: Pack lightweight and comfortable clothing such as shorts, tank tops, sundresses, and t-shirts. Light, long-sleeved clothing can help protect against sunburn.
2.3. Evening Attire: Include a few dressier outfits for dining at upscale restaurants or attending evening events.
2.4. Rain Gear: While Saint Lucia is generally sunny, it’s wise to bring a compact umbrella or a rain jacket for occasional showers, especially during the rainy season (June to November).
2.5. Comfortable Shoes: Sturdy sandals, walking shoes, or hiking boots (if planning to explore the rainforest) are essential for comfort and safety. High heels are best left for the hotel restaurant.
2.6. Hat and Sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
Toiletries and Personal Care
While there are a few toiletries are available in Saint Lucia, it’s a good idea to bring your essentials on your St Lucia vacation as the selection on the island is very limited:
3.1. Sunscreen: Carry high SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from the strong Caribbean sun. It is very expensive here, so bring your own in. The range of sunscreen available is very limited and ensure you bring in a reef friendly sun screen.
3.2. Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes and sand flies can be pesky, especially in more tropical areas. Bring insect repellent with DEET or a suitable alternative.
3.3. Personal Hygiene Products: Pack your preferred toiletries, including toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, and any special skincare items. The shampoo options for European hair are very limited here, so bring your own in.
3.4. Medications: If you have prescription medications, make sure to bring an ample supply and any necessary prescriptions.
3.5. First-Aid Kit: As a precaution, carry a basic first-aid kit with items like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers. Antacids are recommended in case you have have too many rum punches on top of spicy food.
Travel Gear and Accessories
To make your St Lucia vacation more enjoyable and convenient, consider these travel accessories:
4.1. Daypack or Beach Bag: A lightweight daypack or beach bag is handy for carrying essentials when exploring the island or spending a day at the beach.
4.2. Water Bottle: Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle. You can refill it with filtered water at your accommodation.
4.3. Snorkeling Gear: If you’re a fan of snorkeling, consider bringing your own mask, snorkel, and fins for a more comfortable and personalized experience. Tours will offer this equipment though.
4.4. Dry Bag: Keep your valuables and electronics safe from water and sand by packing them in a waterproof dry bag.
4.5. Travel Locks: Secure your luggage and valuables with TSA-approved locks for peace of mind.
4.6. Travel Pillow and Earplugs: These can be invaluable for getting some rest during long flights or car rides. You may need earplugs for the noise of the tree frogs when it rains as they can be very loud.
Electronics and Entertainment
While it’s tempting to disconnect and immerse yourself in Saint Lucia’s natural beauty, you may still want to bring some electronics:
5.1. Smartphone and Charger: Your smartphone can serve as a camera, GPS, and communication device. Don’t forget your charger and a portable power bank.
Saint Lucia’s electrical supply is primarily 220 volts at 50Hz, with some hotels using 100 volts at 60Hz. Most outlets in Saint Lucia are designed for three-pin square plugs, making it convenient for visitors from the United Kingdom to use their appliances. However, travelers from Europe or the United States should remember to bring transformers or adapters for their devices.
5.2. Camera and Accessories: If you’re into photography, bring your camera, extra batteries, memory cards, and a protective case.
5.3. E-Reader or Tablet: These are great for reading on the beach or during downtime.
5.4. Headphones: Noise-canceling headphones can make long flights or bus rides more enjoyable.

Water shoes are great for activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, and windsurfing, providing traction and protection.

The island offers a rich variety of wildlife and natural beauty, making binoculars a handy tool for tourists who want to enhance their experience while exploring the outdoors. Whether you’re gazing at exotic birds or taking in the stunning vistas, binoculars can add a new dimension to your St. Lucia adventure.
Travel Guides and Maps
While you can find valuable information online, consider bringing physical travel guides, maps, or printouts of important details like restaurant recommendations, local attractions, and hiking trails.
Google maps is not always accurate here too! We don’t really use street names as a reference but land marks.
Important Travel Tips
Before concluding our St Lucia packing list, here are some essential travel tips for your St Lucia vacation:
8.1. Leave Some Space: Don’t overpack. Leave some room in your luggage for souvenirs and items you may acquire during your trip. You need space for the local rum and chocolate!
8.2. Check Luggage Restrictions: Be aware of baggage weight and size limits for your airline to avoid excess baggage fees.
8.3. Be Sun-Smart: Protect yourself from the sun by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Seek shade during the hottest part of the day. The sun is hot and fierce here as the island is near the equator.

What Not to Bring
When packing for a Caribbean vacation, it’s important to be mindful of certain unique regulations regarding items you can bring.
- Camouflage Clothing: In several Caribbean islands, including Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad, St Lucia, and Antigua, it’s illegal to wear or bring any form of camouflage. This rule is due to these patterns being reserved for the island’s Defense Force uniforms. If found in your luggage, camouflage items will be confiscated by airport customs, and your clothes may be repackaged in plastic bags.
- Citrus Fruits: In St Lucia, there’s a specific ban on bringing citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and oranges. These fruits are cultivated locally and are only available seasonally on the island. Importing them is not permitted.
- Sex Toys: For those on a romantic getaway, it’s important to note that many Caribbean islands have stringent regulations against the importation of sex toys. This restriction is part of the customs regulation in these destinations.
